INT. ENTERPRISE – BRIDGE

CHEKOV, SULU, UHURA, and SCOTTY stare at the VIEWSCREEN with their

mouths agape. KIRK clenches his jaw to hide his surprise, while

SPOCK observes the turn of events with the raised eyebrow of

Vulcan curiosity.

ON THE VIEWSCREEN

The crew of the ENTERPRISE-D is no less surprised. TROI has the

hardest time hiding her astonishment. WORF simply scowls. DATA

tilts his head slightly as if computing the possibility of the two

Enterprises meeting.

PICARD puts on his best poker face, while next to him RIKER smiles

like a boy meeting his favorite baseball player.

PICARD

This is Jean-Luc Picard, Captain of the

Federation Starship Enterprise … D.

May we render assistance?

KIRK

Enterprise-D? Do you mind if I ask you

what year it is?

PICARD

2367.

KIRK

A hundred years …

Kirk needs a moment to process the information.

KIRK (CONT’D)

Captain Picard, my ship has lost main

main power, shields are down, helm is

inoperable. I would appreciate any help

that you can provide.

EXT. SPACE – ENTERPRISE-D AND ENTERPRISE

The Enterprise-D towers over the original Enterprise as she holds

the smaller ship in a stable orbit over the Guardian Planet with a

TRACTOR BEAM.

PICARD (V.O.)

Captain’s log, stardate 44343.1:

Starfleet has sent us to the Planet of

the Guardian of Forever to investigate

distortions in the space/time continuum.

Upon our arrival we came across some

unexpected guests from the past.

INT. ENTERPRISE-D – OBSERVATION LOUNGE

Picard sits at one end of the long oblong table, flanked by Riker

on his left and Data on his right. Kirk sits at the other end of

the table with Spock and Scotty at his sides.

PICARD (V.O.)

Although I greet Captain James T. Kirk

and his legendary crew with a degree of

awe, I must also express my unease with

what their appearance might mean for our

timeline. I have ordered all personnel

to remain tight-lipped about the fates

of Kirk and his crew.

LA FORGE sits at the middle of the table, gesturing with his hands

as he explains the situation.

LA FORGE

At our current energy output, the

Enterprise-D can only sustain shields

for another 18 hours. After that, both

ships will be vulnerable to the effects

of the temporal anomalies.

SCOTTY

Perhaps we can network your ship’s

shield emitters with ours. We can share

the load. Our Enterprise may be wee

little compared to yours, but she can

hold her own.

La Forge crunches some numbers on his DATA PADD.

LA FORGE

We might be able to extend the viability

of the shields by another 50%.

SCOTTY

No, laddy, try 100.

La Forge finishes his calculations and smiles; Scotty is right.

PICARD

Make it so, Mr. La Forge.

(to Data)

Mr. Data, what are your findings on the

Guardian?

DATA

Commander Spock and I have been using

short-range sensors to observe the

Guardian and its activities. The

fluctuations in the space/time continuum

has deteriorated exponentially since

Spock’s last encounter with the

Guardian. However, it appears that the

Guardian is presently dormant.

Riker’s brow knits in concern.

RIKER

Dormant? Then where are the temporal

distortions coming from?

SPOCK

Not where, Commander. When. Lt. Data and

I hypothesize that the temporal

disturbances are originating from some

time in the past. More precisely, a

hundred years ago, shortly before the

Enterprise-naught was brought into our

future, your present.

PICARD

If the Guardian is dormant now, then how

do we stop the temporal shockwaves

before they do more damage?

SPOCK

I will lead an away team to the planet’s

surface in an attempt to awaken the

Guardian. Once we have done so, then we

will step through the Guardian’s portal

and stop the temporal disturbances in

the past.

RIKER

There are a lot that can go wrong with

that plan.

KIRK

Then we will have to do it right, Mr.

Riker.

Riker nods respectfully at Kirk, his hero.

PICARD

Mr. Data, I want you to assist Mr. Spock

with the away mission.

DATA

Aye, sir.

KIRK

Scotty, make sure that Mr. LaForge gets

all the help he needs.

SCOTTY

With pleasure, Captain.

KIRK

Let’s get to work.

The crews of both Enterprises rise from their seats and exit the

observation lounge. But Kirk remains behind to admire the wall

displaying the BRONZE RELIEF SCULPTURES OF ALL OF THE PAST VESSELS

THAT BORE THE PROUD NAME ENTERPRISE.

KIRK

(to Picard)

Captain, may I have a word?

Picard joins Kirk.

KIRK (CONT’D)

Do you know how these events play out?

PICARD

I know what history has written.

KIRK

Could you be more specific than that?

PICARD

You know I can’t, Captain. The timeline—

KIRK

Yes, the timeline.

Picard nods solemnly.

Kirk takes a moment to study the bronze ships before him.

KIRK (CONT’D)

There are three Enterprises between

yours and mine.

Kirk affectionately touches the original Starship Enterprise.

KIRK (CONT’D)

These ships seem to have a very short

shelf life.

PICARD

We chose a dangerous line of work,

Captain.

KIRK

Indeed we have.

EXT. SPACE – ENTERPRISE-D AND ENTERPRISE

The Enterprise-D and the Enterprise orbit the Guardian Planet. A

RAINBOW OF COLORS lights up the SHIELDS as temporal shockwaves

batter them.

INT. ENTERPRISE-D – READY ROOM

Picard sits at his desk looking over a data PADD. The door CHIMES.

PICARD

Come.

Riker strides in.

RIKER

May I speak candidly, sir?

Picard places the PADD down.

PICARD

Of course, Number One.

Riker straddles the chair in front of Picard’s desk and sits.

RIKER

(indignant)

I think it’s a mistake not warning Kirk

about—

PICARD

(interrupts)

I don’t have to remind you that the

Prime Directive applies to this

situation, Will. We cannot interfere.

The timeline must remain intact. Or do I

have to remind you of the consequences?

RIKER

No, sir.

Yet Riker’s indignation remains.

INT. ENTERPRISE – KIRK’S QUARTERS

Kirk sits at his desk reading a report. His door CHIMES.

KIRK

Come in.

The doors SWOOSH open, and Scotty enters.

KIRK (CONT’D)

Scotty, did you get what I asked for?

Scotty makes his way toward Kirk and stops in front of his desk.

SCOTTY

I did, Captain. It was as easy as

replacing a warp coil. Apparently, the

crew reveres us as legends of sorts.

Scotty proudly smiles.

KIRK

Don’t let it get to your head.

SCOTTY

Not me, Captain. But it got me in good

with her chief engineer. He gave me free

reign of her engine room. And what a

marvel it was!

 KIRK

Stick to the subject, Scotty.

SCOTTY

Right, Captain.

KIRK

What did you find out?

Scotty’s chipper demeanor turns dour.

SCOTTY

Terrible news, Captain. According to the

historical records …

Scotty swallows hard.

KIRK

Out with it, Chief.

SCOTTY

Shortly after we arrived at the Guardian

Planet, the Enterprise … our

Enterprise was destroyed.

EXT. THE GUARDIAN PLANET

Spock and Data, dressed in EV SUITS, approach the Guardian of

Forever. The TIME STORM whips up dust, obscuring the Shuttlecraft

Hawking and the other members of the AWAY TEAM in the background.

Tricorders in hand, Spock and Data scan the Guardian. The faces of

Spock and Data can clearly be seen through the protective faces of

their helmets.

Suddenly, through the portal, TWO FIGURES appear similarly dressed

to Spock and Data. Data raises his tricorder. DATA’S DOPPELGANGER

raises his tricorder at the same time.

Data looks at Spock.

SPOCK

It appears to be an echo of the present.

DATA

Or the future. If I’m not mistaken, the

temples on your mirror image appear to

have white hair.

SPOCK

Curious.

Spock takes a step forward, and so does SPOCK’S DOPPELGANGER.

Spock leans in to take a closer look.

Abruptly SPOCK’S DOPPELGANGER grabs SPOCK and drags him into the

PORTAL.

DATA

Commander—!

But before he can finish, DATA is pulled into the PORTAL by a PAIR OF PALE HANDS.
