Best and Worst TV Shows of 2008

BEST TV SHOWS OF 2008

1. Battlestar Galactica – Still the Best. Show. On. Television.

2. Lost – I’m so glad it got better again. “The Constant” was one of my favorite episodes of all time, for ANY show.

3. The Daily Show/The Colbert Report – I didn’t get sued for putting them together last year, so I thought I’d do it again. With the election, it only got better.

4. John Adams – Unbelievably good in every way.

5. Chuck – This show started out good, and continues to get better.

6. The Office – Starting to lose some steam, but still top ten for sure.

7. Psych – I still love this pop-culture-reference-laden detective spoof and look forward to seeing it every week.

8. The Venture Bros. – Maybe it’s just because I’m such a comic book/sci-fi/pop culture geek, but I can’t get enough of this hilarious cartoon.

9. Big Bang Theory – Again, this may not be so great for the average viewer, but since I’m so often “in on the joke” when it comes to these four nerds, I laugh out loud every episode.

10. Boston Legal  This show really went out with a Shat-tastic bang.

WORST TV SHOWS OF 2008

1. Reality TV – Yes, all of it. The whole genre: the Survivors, the American Idols, the stupid-ass game shows, and the follow-some-idiot-around-with-a-camera shows all deserve to die a long and horrible death. Even the ones I used to watch for fun, like Last Comic Standing and Who Wants to Be a Superhero? are too bad to watch now.

2. Knight Rider – I honestly didn’t think they could do worse than the cheesy original, but, man, did they succeed.

3. According to Jim – As long as this sucktastic show is on the air, it will remain on my “Worst of” list. Especially when so many GOOD shows get cancelled while it somehow survives.

4. Two and a Half Men – Why am I picking on this show again? It may not be quite as bad as some other shows, but the other shows that suck don’t win Emmys.

5. 90210 – Seriously? SERIOUSLY? See Knight Rider above, and multiply it by ten.

Gary Seven Returns

assignment_earth_issue_2Well, to be accurate, he’s been back for several months in a comic book mini-series from IDW called Star Trek: Assignment Earth. But now you can get the entire five-issue series in a trade paperback at comic stores and places like Amazon.com. It’s written and drawn by John Byrne, one of my favorite comic artists (although I liked his art better when it was inked by real inkers instead of either roughly inked or just pencilled-and-scanned by Byrne…but I digress), and he does a good job of giving us a taste of what Assignment: Earth would have been like if the series had actually been made (the Star Trek episode of the same name was supposed to be a backdoor pilot). If you’re a fan of Gary Seven, Star Trek, or Byrne, I highly recommend it.

More Clues Re: the Final Cylon [SPOILERS]

•December 23, 2008 • Leave a Comment

They finally have a clue that makes sense to me at “You Will Know The Truth” over at SciFi.com, the place where you’re supposed to be able to figure out who the final Cylon is if you pay enough attention. Gaeta states that he hopes people will finally figure out who he is. It’s reminiscent of the scene where Gaeta goes into Baltar’s cell and starts messing with him, which eventually leads up to Baltar whispering in Gaeta’s ear and then Gaeta stabbing him with a pen. So what did he say? That he knew he was a Cylon? Or that he knew he was gay (which was confirmed in the new webisodes, Battlestar Galactica: The Face of the Enemy)? [UPDATE: One of the producers claimed in a podcast that the scene was a remainder of a deleteted subplot, but they’ve been known to deceive us before…]

Also, in the new previews for the January 16 return of the show for Season 4.5, one of the onscreen questions is “Who is the final Cylon?” followed by quick flashes of several characters: Admiral Adama, Felix Gaeta, Helo, Baltar, Dualla, Laura Roslin, Lee Adama, Tom Zarek, and Starbuck. Assuming they’re not pulling a fast one on us by not showing the actual final Cylon (admittedly a possibility), if you match those up with the names that ScyFy Portal claimed were the shortlist, and it narrows it down to three: Lee, Roslin…and Gaeta. Now, if you add in the fact that Ron Moore claims the final Cylon isn’t in the “Last Supper” picture, that leaves out Roslin and Lee.

And that leaves us with one suspect.

So either it’s looking more and more like I’m right about Gaeta being the final Cylon, or they’re trying to make it really obvious in order to throw us off.

keysAnother book in which one of my short stories appears is now available on Amazon.com. Because it’s an anthology, they only list one of the other authors, so you can’t find it by searching for my name. Here’s the link: Keys: Unlocking the Universe. Please go and buy it so I can be a rich and famous writer!

Smallville (8.10)-“Bride” Review at Pop Syndicate

Yeah, I know it’s late…WAY late. But my Tivo fried and I lost the episode along with about 70 other shows. I tried everything I could to get it back, including buying some used Tivos on Ebay and switching out the hard drive, but no luck. So I finally broke down and bought the episode as a download on Amazon.com. After all the trouble and cost I went to, the least you can do is go here and read it…

Gaeta Stars in New Webisodes

batt_gaeta_400x400

My pick for the final Cylon, Lt. Felix Gaeta, is now the star of a ten-part series of webisodes on SciFi.com entitled Battlestar Galactica: The Face of the Enemy. One of the reasons that has been given around the ‘Net for Gaeta not to be the right choice is that he hasn’t been a prominent enough character. Might this be an answer to this complaint? And, by the way, the first webisode finally answers the long-rumored issue about Gaeta being homosexual…

Peter David is a Cool Guy

peter-david  I meant to post this months ago, but somehow it slipped through the cracks…

You sometimes hear horror stories about people meeting one of their favorite actors, musicians, or athletes and being treated badly or indifferently by them, which often ruins someone’s perception of that person. Usually you can’t really blame the celebrity. After all, nobody wants to be bothered constantly to begin with, and it would be difficult for anyone to always be friendly to strangers who come up an act like they know you. Having lived in L.A. for several years, I grew fairly accustomed to seeing famous people–mostly actors, but sometimes people like Maya Angelou–around town, and generally I know better than to bother them, even if I’m a big fan.  I’ve even had Larry David walk past me not once, but TWICE, on the street, and I didn’t say a word despite the fact that Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm are two of my favorite shows of all time. But there are some circumstances when it should be considered okay to say hi, if not expected. For example, I saw Harlan Ellison speak once and bought a book from him afterwards and got it signed, and he was extremely nice to everyone there.

A situation like Comic-Con in San Diego is kind of a gray area. On the one hand, these actors, writers, artists, etc. are usually there to sell something or to push a movie, TV show, or book, so they know they’re going to be stuck talking to a bunch of fans. But what about when the person is simply trying to walk down the hall, or get something to eat? Usually, I’d say let the person be.

This year at Comic-Con, I was walking with my family and saw one of my favorite comic writers (and absolute favorite Star Trek writer), Peter David (no relation to Larry that I know of) walking a few feet in front of us. I told my wife who he was, and she said I should say hi to him, but I hesitated for two reasons. First, he was just trying to get to where he was going–it wasn’t like he was sitting at a booth selling books or something–and second, I was a little bit scared. Why? Well, Mr. David has a reputation for having a, shall we say…abrasive personality. And a few years ago, I saw him on a panel at an earlier Comic-Con, and what I heard seemed to support that reputation. To be honest, I had been a little disappointed after being a huge fan for so many years.

But my wife was pretty insistent, and said, “Who cares? You’ll probably never get another chance to tell him what a big fan you are.” So I decided to go for it. I sped up a little, and said, “Mr. David, I don’t want to bother you, but I just wanted you to know what a big fan I am.” And he stopped and looked at me. Then he looked at my nametag and smiled and shook my hand and said “Thanks!”

Then, to my surprise, he asked, “Is this your family?” And started talking to us.  He was especially nice to my seven-year-old daughter, asking her things like her name and what grade she was in. He didn’t act one bit annoyed that I had stopped him, or like he was in too much of a hurry to take a couple of minutes to speak to us. Then he shook my hand again and said, “Nice meeting you” and left.

Now, Peter David may not be a household name, but at an event like Comic-Con he’s definitely a celebrity. It was very refreshing to not only have someone like that be so friendly, but also to have my perception of someone I admire change for the better. Thanks, Mr. David.

Another Update on Gaeta as the Final Cylon [SPOILERS]

•December 1, 2008 • 3 Comments

Gaeta ScyFyPortal claims that it has inside info on the identity of the last of the Twelve Cylons, but rather than just give up the name, they’ve narrowed it down to five. Guess who’s on the list? That’s right, Felix Gaeta. He’s still my top choice, with the other four on their list being Laura Roslin, Ellen Tigh, Cally Tyrol, and Lee Adama. If their information is correct, then it rules out my second choice, Dualla, as well as some of my other top suspects, including Helo and Tom Zarek.

Whether or not it’ll pan out remains to be seen, so make sure you tune in to the Sci Fi Channel on January 16 when Battlestar Galactica returns.
